A Distinguished Career

After a remarkable career spanning over 36 years, Dr. Richard Anderson is retiring. Dr. Anderson’s dedication to medicine, commitment to patient care, and contributions to the Gunnison Valley Hospital medical community have left an indelible mark on both colleagues and patients alike for over 23 years.

Early Beginnings

Dr. Anderson’s journey into medicine began with a passion for science and a desire to help others. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees from Pennsylvania State University, and

Attended medical school at University of Utah in which he completed a cardiothoracic fellowship. Dr. Anderson embarked on a career that would see him improve, enhance and save many lives.   

Commitment to Patient Care

What truly set Dr. Anderson apart was his unwavering commitment to patient care. Dr. Anderson made every patient feel valued and understood. His ability to combine medical expertise with genuine empathy, earned the trust and gratitude of countless patients, their families, GVH staff and providers. 

Reflections and Future Plans

As Dr. Anderson steps into retirement, he reflects on a career filled with meaningful experiences and accomplishments. "I am grateful for the opportunities I've had to make a difference in my patients' lives and to work alongside friends that I made," Dr. Anderson shares. "While I will miss the daily interactions and challenges, I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and pursuing personal interests."

Gunnison, UT – Gunnison Valley Hospital’s surgeon of 23 years, Dr. Richard Anderson, M.D., officially retired August 13th, and new surgeon Dr. Tanner Allen, D.O. started working August 1st at Gunnison Valley Hospital.

Dr. Anderson received his master’s and doctorate degrees from Pennsylvania State University and attended medical school at University of Utah in which he completed a cardiothoracic fellowship.

As Dr. Anderson steps into retirement, he reflects on a career filled with meaningful experiences and accomplishments. Letting go of Dr. Anderson won’t be easy for the hospital; at the same time, they are excited for the talent they just hired on, Dr. Tanner Allen, D.O., to fulfil the general surgery needs at Gunnison Valley Hospital.

Dr. Tanner Allen is a board-certified general surgeon and specializes in a wide range of surgical procedures, including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries, hernia repairs, and gastrointestinal surgeries.

Dr. Allen is a native to Sanpete County, graduating from North Sanpete High School with both his High School Diploma and his Associates of Science Degree at the same time. He went on to receive his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Utah State University.

He attended Medical School at A.T. Still University- Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri, and then completed a 5-year residency in general surgery in the suburbs of Detroit Michigan.
